More years ago than I care to remember, I took a yoga class at my local college. I lost weight, increased flexibility, and felt overall better. Unfortunately, a later back injury ended that activity. However, I remember the beginning of class and how silly I thought it was when the teacher would say, “Don’t forget to breathe.” How did one forget to breathe? And then came the day when I was working on Warrior pose. The teacher stood behind me giving little hints to improve. Then she said, “Don’t forget to breathe.” I felt much better. I’d been so focused on my body’s position, I’d been holding my breath. It’s a lamentable habit: I become so focused on a task I lose sight of the important details. It isn’t an uncommon problem, or the teacher wouldn’t have been repeating, during every class, don’t forget to breathe. I need to remember to say that to myself more often.

  1. I have a friend who often says, “Just breathe.” Especially when life is overwhelming. It is a little nudge to remember to keep calm and take things one step at a time.
