Meme Debunking

Over on social media, the following was posted:

I hope and pray that 2019 is much easier than 2018.

This has been a challenging year.

My first thought was to agree wholeheartedly, until this quote popped into my brain:

“Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men! Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for powers equal to your tasks! Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle. But you shall be a miracle. Every day you shall wonder at yourself, at the richness of life which has come to you by the grace of God.” ~ Phillips Brooks

I spent my whole life asking for easy, believing smooth sailing meant I was in tune with God. How wrong I was.

I’ve stopped asking for easy, though occasions arise when I ask for a moment of peace, to catch my breath. I’m learning to remember to ask for the ability to meet whatever comes my way.

Rewrite:

I hope and pray that 2019 sees me rise to the challenges without complaint.

I already know it will be a challenging year. Life is challenging.

If it isn’t, I’m doing it wrong.
