What to do…

I struggle with telemarketers, be it texting or phone calls. I don’t handle it well. I want to rage and snarl and snap. My reaction is WAY out of proportion to an unwanted phone call. They are doing their job. Usually, I hang up or I don’t answer at all. Every once in a while, I respond, usually not politely. Honestly, I’m not proud of it.

I feel violated, my time, my space, my integrity. I don’t know why I feel that last one, maybe because I let the bear inside me out and that isn’t who I want to be.

Fear is also a factor. I’m afraid of saying something I shouldn’t. There are scammers that record you saying “Yes” and use it for fraudulent purposes.

I don’t want to be afraid anymore. I don’t want to respond with anger, which is my cover emotion for fear.

I have no answers, at this point. There may not be any. I’m not sure what to do, but nothing will change if I don’t admit there’s a problem and a desire to change.

  1. My go to is to interrupt them with “I don’t buy/donate anything over the phone” and then hang up. Not polite maybe, but because I have my answer planned I don’t get as upset, and I don’t stay on the line for them to argue

    • I don’t think that’s rude; it’s the truth. With all the scams perpetuated over the phone, I find it difficult to believe anyone legitimate would do phone solicitations.

  2. Have you tried this:
How do I get telemarketers to stop calling me?
You can register your numbers on the national Do Not Call list by phone or on the Internet at no cost.
To register via the Internet, go to http://www.donotcall.gov .
To register by phone, call 1-888-382-1222 (voice) or 1-866-290-4236 (TTY). You must call from the phone number you wish to register.

    • Yes. Unfortunately, many business ignore it and scammers don’t care. Charities and political groups aren’t bound by the register.

  3. I simply hang up. There are other jobs, right? That’s what I tell myself so I don’t feel guilty . . .

    • I usually don’t answer, or I hang up. The problem is when my dad answers and tells them I’m home. *sigh*

      • Ah. Now I get it 🙂

        • I have a bad habit of not giving all the details.

  4. I sometimes go off into a outburst of madness. If they are calling about cleaning ducts in the house I will either shriek or whisper that the ducts must not be touched as there are demons living in the ducts and any cleaning will allow them to escape and take over the whole house. They usually hang up after that kind of outburst.

    • Howling!! 😀
