Parable of the Talents

The Bible tells the story of a master/lord giving his servants talents. At the time of the telling of the story, a talent was a measure of currency.

One servant is given 10 talents.

One servant is given 5 talents.

One servant is given 1 talent.

All are told to do something, anything they want, but do something with the talents given them.

The master/lord goes away. When he returns he calls the three servants to them and seeks an accounting of what they’ve done with what he’s given them.

The servant with 10 talents added 10 more, returning to the master 20 talents.

The servant with 5 talents added 5 more, returning to the master 10 talents.

The servant with 1 talent buried it, returning to the master the original talent.

The master/lord praises the first two servants. To the first, he gives another 10 talents, knowing the servant will work to increase them. To the second, he gives another 5 talents, again knowing the servant will work to increase them. From the third, the master/lord takes the 1 talent and gives it to the servant who was given 10 talents.

I wonder how much of my lack is because I’ve buried my talents?

  1. I dunno. It seems to me you’re using your writing talent.

    • One of my high school English teachers told me to pursue writing. It took me almost 30 years. 🙄
